How is the distance between two airports measured?
Every distance here is the great-circle distance — the shortest path between two points over the surface of the Earth, measured airport to airport. It's the same baseline airlines and distance-based mileage programs use, shown in miles, nautical miles and kilometers.
What is great-circle distance?
A great circle is the shortest route between two points on a sphere. On a flat map it looks curved — that's why a Los Angeles–London flight appears to arc up over Greenland — but it's the most direct path a plane can actually fly.
How accurate is the estimated flight time?
Flight time is estimated from the great-circle distance at a typical cruise speed, plus time to climb and descend. Real schedules vary a few percent by aircraft, routing and winds — eastbound and westbound legs rarely match.
What is US DOT T-100 traffic?
T-100 is data carriers file with the US Department of Transportation on what actually operated: departures, seats, passengers and load factor by airline and aircraft type. We show it on routes where it's filed — observed traffic, not a published schedule.
Do these distances match the miles my airline credits?
Distance-based programs credit off the great-circle figure shown here, then apply your fare-class earning rate. Revenue-based programs credit off the fare instead, so treat the distance as a guide rather than an exact earn.
